Last year was a tough one for women. It seemed like we were on the verge of electing a woman as the most powerful person on the planet. Of course that's not the way it worked out. Hillary Clinton’s stunning loss in the 2016 U.S. presidential election left many women feeling untethered. She constantly used her position to break taboos and bring the spotlight where it was needed most.

This past Sunday, Coppola picked up the best director prize at the French film festival, becoming only the second female director to do so in the event's 70-year history. Coppola was honored for directing her film "The Beguiled," a thriller starring Nicole Kidman as a woman who runs a Southern girls' boarding school during the Civil War.
